Day of Silence Poster Contest
Illinois Safe Schools Alliance is super stoked to put out the official call 📡📢 for 2020’s Day of Silence art! 🎨📷📐
Said art will be featured on shirts, posters and buttons as provided through our Day of Silence kits and will go out to hundreds 👀 of students in GSAs and LGBTQ+ youth groups throughout the state! The winning design will be chosen by the Alliance Youth Committee and the artist of which will receive a $100 stipend for their design. 💰
Important notes to keep in mind:
· Submissions are due Monday, January 6th (the chosen design will be determined via Youth Committee vote by 1/13 at which time artists will be notified)
· Submissions must be made digitally as a PDF file (so that we can add in Alliance and PHIMC branding)
· Please note that Day of Silence is “a project of GLSEN” in your design
· This year, Day of Silence is happening on Friday, April 24, 2020
· Previous year’s designs are copied below for reference/inspiration!

Congressman Brad Schneider is excited to announce this year’s theme and dates for the 2020 Congressional Art Competition.
Theme:
This year’s theme is “From Many, One” which in Latin reads “E Pluribus Unum”. Students are encouraged to interpret the theme however they chose and submit artwork that reflects their interpretation.

Please mark your calendar for April 2020. Artwork will be due in early April, and we will hold art show in late April. We’ll reach out in February 2020 when we have confirmed event deadlines from the national organizers.

Every category has specific requirements so please read the Guidelines and Category Descriptions carefully. Note that you will need your educator's email address.
3. Send in the Required Forms
After uploading your work, print your submission forms and have a parent or guardian and an educator sign them. The Senior Scholarship Exhibition is one of Illinois largest and most influential student scholarship exhibitions. This truly unique exhibition celebrates artistic achievement and provides talented young artists with opportunities to succeed in higher education and creative careers.
Completed portfolio submissions will be reviewed by College Admissions Representatives from over 40 accredited art schools, colleges, and universities from across the country for possible scholarship consideration. Colleges will begin reviewing portfolios November 1st.

ISBE Art Contest
The theme for the 2019 Art Contest is “Art Connects History with the Future!” and all ages are eligible to enter. This year the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is partnering with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) in cooperation with the Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA) that will merge two contests into one. The 2019 Art Contest will include an Elementary (K-5). Middle (6-8), and High School (9-12) categories. The judges will select a winner and five runners-up in each category that will be on display at the ALPLM for a full year. A poster winner will then be picked from the three category winners and their art work will be featured on the Illinois Art Education Week (March 11-17, 2019) poster. ISBE will print and send this poster to all public and private schools to recognize the importance of the arts in the education of all students. The entries must be postmarked by December 14, 2018.

ELIGIBILITY
High School students grade level 9-12 from Chicago and the surrounding region are welcome to apply. Each year Ragdale accepts 24 students in Creative Writing, 24 in Visual Arts, and 12 students in Performance, following a competitive selection process. We encourage students of all backgrounds and levels of experience to apply. Ragdale does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of age, disability, gender, origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
WHEN & WHERE
High School Arts Week will take place Monday through Friday, July 23-27 from 10am-4pm at the historic campus of The Ragdale Foundation, 1260 North Green Bay Road in Lake Forest.
Visual Arts Intensive: Student artists under the guidance of Regin Igloria, artist and educator, are invited to explore the concepts of site, space, and place through guided investigations in art, using the Ragdale grounds as an inspiration for creative engagement.

Prizes:
The winning entry will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. The 2nd and 3rd place pieces will be displayed in the Congressman’s District and Washington D.C. offices, respectively.
The first prize winner will also receive two round-trip airline tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines to Washington, DC. and have the opportunity to attend the Congressional Art Competition award ceremony. At that ceremony, our district’s winner will see their winning artwork hung in the Capitol, and be joined by other first prize entries from the other 434 Congressional Districts.

Accompanying the upcoming opening of the Spring Play: Murder in the Knife Room there is a call for art for a "The Butter Knife Collection".
Out of sensitivity to the school's weapon policy the call for art is for BUTTER KNIVES ONLY.
We are looking for:
Paintings of butter knives? Butter knife earrings? Ceramic butter knives? 3-D butter knives? Artistic Photographs of butter knives? Sculptures made from butter knives? The sky is the limit.
Top entries will be featured in an exhibit called "The Butter Knife Collection" at the theatre during the run of the show.

Submissions are due by Friday, February 17, at 3 p.m., to Mrs. Davis in the Principal’s Office.

Spend a Night at the Museum March 18–19 Spread the word! Applications for Re:Imagine24, our annual teen overnighter, are now open for high school students. This event brings together 100 Chicagoland teens for 24 hours at the Art Institute to activate the museum collection through interpretation and art making. Hosted by the Teen Council , this free program also features late-night gallery visits; opportunities to collaborate with and learn from artists, museum staff, and fellow participants; and more. All meals, snacks, and supplies are included.

Each year we work with art programs in schools across the state to coordinate the submission, judging, selection, and exhibition of over 500 works of art from 500 student artists. Between our two separate shows: the General Exhibition (for non-portfolio students) and the Senior Portfolio show (only for seniors), the IHSAE coordinated the offering of over $15M in scholarship offers and nearly $15K in awards. If you are new to the exhibition this year, we have partnered with the Zhou Brothers to provide a space that allows for our growth and for the Illinois community to gain exposure to the energy that the arts has in Illinois. This show, just like the Third Friday opening, will exhibit all of the student work as well as the work of the resident artists in the building. The main difference between this show and the third friday show is that awards will be revealed and presented to students and families. This will only happen on Sunday, March 6th. NOTE: Students must be in attendance to receive their awards! Any student selected for an award that is not in attendance will forfeit their award's prizes but will still receive recognition for their award. Remember to remind students to stay for the awards ceremony if their work was selected for an IHSAE award. 11:00am - 2:00pmCollege Fair The IHSAE will open our doors for a pre-exhibition College Conversations opportunity for students and their families to meet with all our college sponsors. Students will have a chance to speak with College Representatives regarding Post-Secondary Education and make meaningful connections. Please remind students to check the IHSAE website for a list of attending schools and read their emails for potential correspondence from college representatives. 2:00pmOpening Receptions Begins 3:30pmIHSAE Awards Ceremony The awards ceremony is meant to recognize all the students who were selected for exhibition. The ceremony will begin at 3:30pm and the selected student's attendance is required for all IHSAE awards to be claimed. Students who are not in attendance, will forfeit their award(s). The student (or an immediate family member) must be present, and teachers will not be able to accept IHSAE awards on behalf of their students. Artwork that has been chosen to receive an IHSAE award will have an identifying label placed on it, so students will be aware their work has been selected for an award prior to the start of the ceremony. All student winners should proceed to the 2nd Floor Gallery beginning at 3:00 to the designated seating area.
